Flossing Is an Important Part of Gum Disease Prevention

Gum disease is an insidious condition that can cause a lot of long-lasting problems. It starts with an infection of your gums, but if you don't treat it, it becomes much more than that. It can spread throughout your body, affecting other organs, and it can lead to tooth loss.
While early gum disease, also called gingivitis, is easy to treat, more advanced forms of the condition are not. Flossing plays an important part in dealing with gingivitis, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
Bacteria Hides from Toothbrushes
Toothbrushes are great. They eliminate much of the bacteria and plaque that builds up on the surface of your teeth and along the gumline. They can clean your tongue and help keep your mouth healthy. However, even those toothbrushes with the longest and thinnest bristles can't reach everywhere. It's impossible for a toothbrush to get into some of the small spaces between your teeth, and that's where bacteria can collect and multiply.
Flossing Gets that Bacteria
Floss, on the other hand, can easily slip between your teeth and capture this bacteria before it can infect your gums. This is why it's important that you floss at least once a day. Otherwise, you're only doing half the job. Yes, you're getting rid of most of the bad bacteria in your mouth by brushing, but the bacteria you miss can cause gum disease. If you know how to floss correctly, it shouldn't take very long to clean between all of your teeth.
